Technical Director Ecology (Scotland)

A leading consultancy is seeking a Technical Director Ecology to head up its Scottish terrestrial ecology team. This senior role oversees around 20 ecologists across two offices, supporting a varied portfolio of projects and shaping the long-term direction of ecology services in Scotland.

The Role

  • Provide senior technical leadership across major ecological projects
  • Oversee project delivery, quality assurance, and compliance
  • Review EIAR, HRA and other technical reports
  • Support fee proposals, tenders, and client engagement
  • Lead team performance, recruitment, and staff development
  • Act as a key contact for statutory consultees and multidisciplinary teams
  • Contribute to business planning, financial performance, and service growth

Youll maintain oversight of 150170 active projects annually, ranging from small assignments to major infrastructure work.

What Youll Bring

  • Strong experience in ecological consultancy and team leadership
  • Deep understanding of the Scottish planning system
  • Technical expertise in EIAR, HRA and ecological assessment
  • Commercial awareness, including budgeting and forecasting
  • Ability to mentor and develop staff at all levels
  • Confidence engaging with clients, consultees, and partners

Experience with Public Local Inquiry/DCO processes, protected species licensing, or a recognised technical specialism would be beneficial.
