Trainee Ecologist
Location: Scotland (Office-based with field travel)
Salary: £26,000 – £28,000 per annum
Type: Full-time | Permanent | In-person
A respected, boutique environmental consultancy is seeking a Trainee Ecologist to support a range of ecological projects across Scotland. This is a hands-on role ideal for someone looking to build a career in ecology through structured mentorship, field experience, and professional development.
You’ll work closely with senior ecologists and technical specialists, contributing to protected species surveys, habitat assessments, mapping, reporting, and client liaison. Fieldwork will include travel to active sites and occasional overnight stays.
What You’ll Do
- Conduct desk studies and share findings with colleagues
- Create and update maps using QGIS
- Support habitat and protected species surveys (e.g. bats, great crested newts)
- Assist with licence applications for protected species
- Draft and revise ecological reports to agreed timelines
- Liaise with clients and stakeholders throughout project delivery
- Attend meetings and site visits across Scotland
- Undertake training to develop your ecological skills
- Maintain professional standards and represent the consultancy positively
- Stay up to date with legislation, best practice, and industry guidance
- Promote the business and contribute to its reputation
What You’ll Bring
- Relevant qualifications in ecology, environmental science, or a related field
- Interest in ecological legislation and survey techniques
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to build sound working relationships with colleagues and clients
- Full UK driving licence (minimum two years’ experience) and access to a car
- Willingness to work flexible hours during survey seasons (March–September)
- Commitment to professional development (CIEEM membership encouraged)
Working Hours
- 40 hours per week
- Additional hours may be required during peak survey seasons
- Mix of office-based work and fieldwork, with increased field time March–September
