Paraplanner

An established independent financial planning firm in East Lothian is seeking an experienced paraplanner to join its growing team and strengthen its technical backbone.  This opportunity will appeal to someone who takes pride in precision, robust analysis, and well-reasoned advice rather than high-volume output. The successful candidate will enjoy working in a collaborative and client centric environment and used to being trusted with client work and play an influential role in maintaining high professional standards across the business.

Working alongside experienced financial advisers, the paraplanner will be a key contributor to the firm’s advice process. The focus is on quality, depth, and consistency, supporting advisers by ensuring recommendations are soundly researched, clearly articulated, and compliant.

While most routine cases are handled externally, this role concentrates on bespoke and technical work, as well as reviewing third-party outputs to ensure they meet internal and regulatory expectations. There may be occasional involvement in client meetings or direct client contact where appropriate.

Key responsibilities:

• Conducting in-depth technical research across pensions, investments, personal taxation, and protection
• Producing and reviewing complex suitability reports and supporting advisory documentation
• Preparing advisers for meetings, including technical input and cashflow modelling support
• Acting as a technical quality filter for outsourced paraplanning work
• Liaising with platforms, providers, and specialist partners to obtain information and resolve queries
• Maintaining exemplary client records and file audit standards
• Helping refine internal templates, workflows, and technical processes over time

This role suits someone who is methodical, confident in their technical judgement, and comfortable working with a high degree of autonomy. They will be someone who values clarity, challenges assumptions constructively, and enjoys improving how work is delivered.  

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

• Proven experience in a technical paraplanning position
• Strong working knowledge of UK pensions, investments, and personal taxation
• Demonstrable experience producing or auditing suitability reports
• Confident user of financial planning systems and digital tools

Desirable

• Diploma level qualified or progressing toward it
• Experience with cashflow modelling software
• Awareness of FCA expectations and outcome-focused advice delivery
