Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) – Edinburgh
Salary: £35,000–£40,000
Relaxed officed days policy
I’m currently supporting a well-established environmental consultancy as they look to bring an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) into their team. I know the title can sometimes feel a bit niche, so I want to explain what the role actually involves - and why it could be a great next step for the right person.
What the role really is
This is a site-based ecological and environmental compliance role, working directly with contractors and project teams to ensure construction activities are carried out responsibly and in line with ecological and environmental requirements.
It’s ideal for someone who enjoys being out on site, solving problems in real time, and having a direct influence on how projects are delivered. You’ll be the person contractors rely on for ecological advice, practical solutions and day-to-day environmental oversight.
The organisation works across renewables, infrastructure, peatland restoration and property development, so the work is varied, meaningful and often linked to Scotland’s net-zero transition. The team is known for being supportive, flexible and people-focused.
Who this role suits
You don’t need to have held the exact title “ECoW” before. People often move into this role from:
- Assistant or Consultant Ecologist roles
- Senior Ecologists wanting more site-based responsibility
- EnvCoWs or Environmental Advisors with ecological experience
- Ecologists with protected species experience who enjoy practical delivery
- Environmental Officers from renewables, utilities or civil engineering
If you’re confident on construction sites, understand ecological constraints, and enjoy being the go-to person for practical ecological advice, you’ll likely fit this role very naturally.
What you’ll be doing
- Acting as the on-site ecological advisor
- Ensuring compliance with ecological mitigation, planning conditions and licence requirements
- Delivering toolbox talks and advising contractors on ecological constraints
- Monitoring works to protect habitats and species
- Attending site meetings and producing clear, concise reports
- Supporting clients throughout the construction phase
- Liaising with regulators, NGOs and stakeholders
- Contributing to ecological input for site documentation (e.g., CEMPs)
- Supporting and mentoring junior team members where needed
It’s a great mix of site work, problem-solving, communication and practical ecological delivery.
What the consultancy is looking for
- Around 3+ years’ experience in ecology or an ECoW/EnvCoW-type role
- Good understanding of UK ecological legislation and guidance
- Experience working on construction sites or with contractors
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently on site
- Full driving licence
- Protected species experience or licences are beneficial but not essential
