Location: Edinburgh or Glasgow (Hybrid)

Salary: £70,000£80,000 (DOE)

Contract: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week

About the Role

We are partnering with a leading environmental and planning consultancy recognised for its commitment to creating better futures for people, nature, and place. With a strong UK-wide presence and a deep-rooted sustainability ethos, they are seeking an experienced and visionary Director of Ecology to lead and grow their services across Scotland and Northern England.

This is a key leadership position within a purpose-driven, employee-owned organisation. You will guide a talented multidisciplinary team and contribute to some of the UKs most high-profile and rewarding environmental projects.

The role is based in either Edinburgh or Glasgow, with flexible hybrid working and occasional travel to sites, client meetings, and other offices.

About the Consultancy

With almost 60 years of experience, this consultancy has built a national reputation for excellence in environmental planning, landscape architecture, ecology, and sustainability. Their Ecology team operates across six UK offices, supporting a diverse portfolio of work including renewable energy, infrastructure, conservation, heritage, and green/blue infrastructure projects.

Following the launch of an ambitious new strategy, the organisation is investing heavily in its people and capabilities. This role offers the opportunity not only to lead significant ecological work but also to influence company-wide strategy, culture, and long-term growth.

Key Responsibilities

As a senior member of the Ecology Leadership Team, you will:

  • Lead the strategic development and delivery of ecology services across Scotland and Northern England.
  • Contribute to team-wide planning, resource management, and business development.
  • Mentor and inspire a team of ecologists and ornithologists.
  • Champion excellence in ecological survey, assessment, and project delivery.
  • Oversee a portfolio of consultancy projects, ensuring quality, performance, and profitability.
  • Represent the organisation at industry events and contribute to sector best practice.
  • Help shape scientific, technical, and operational standards across the ecology discipline.

About You

We are looking for a credible, confident leader with a strong background in ecological consultancy and a passion for delivering long-term environmental value.

Essential requirements:

  • Extensive UK ecological consultancy experience, including senior leadership responsibilities.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, grow business, and secure new work.
  • Strong understanding of UK ecological survey methods, planning policy, and legislation with particular relevance to Scotland.
  • Excellent communication, commercial awareness, and project management skills.
