Improving Mental Health At Work - Six Top Apps

Mental Health at work

It is sad to say that many employees are still hiding mental health issues from their employers, despite the growing support there is in this area.

The cost of poor mental health to the UK economy is estimated to be between £33-42 billion a year, a figure that continues to rise, and will likely spike as a result of COVID19.

Recent research by Deloitte highlights an always-on mindset that drives a culture of presenteeism among employees to keep working even when they are not at their most productive.

The impact is felt disproportionately amongst younger employees. 37% of 18-24-year-olds say they conceal their mental health problems from their employers compared to 26% amongst 33-44-year-olds and just 13% of over 55-year-olds.

With 83% of employees surveyed suggesting they noticed a decline in their mental health, it is so crucial that employers take steps to support their team, whether they are in the office or working from home.

So here are six digital platforms or apps that you could introduce to your business that will help your team manage their mental health.

Unmind

Unmind started as a solution to solve absenteeism, presenteeism and a high turnover amongst a highly stressed team within the NHS.

Dr Nick Taylor was a lead clinical psychologist. He uncovered the benefit of combining clinical science with corporate wellness to help teams to manage their mental well-being and drive up productivity.

Unmind puts the power in the hands of the employees. Their clinically backed system provides a range of, what they call, "self-guided programmes". These cover a range of issues relating to stress in small interactive courses.

The programmes are reinforced with exercises that will provide in the moment support to help build healthy habits.

Unmind also provides excellent insights to help chart progress. Everyone moves at their own pace, but it is progress that we all crave. Unmind enables you to track and build upon the successes you encounter.

Welbot

The team at Welbot have just launched their Enterprise 3.0, which has been crafted with office and remote workers in mind. It integrates with existing well-being products and is perfect for SMEs and enterprise organisations.

The Welbot concept combats the impact of the time most of us spend in front of a computer screen or sitting at a desk. The theory was tested by the University of Strathclyde identified the real difference digital interventions can make in breaking down depression, anxiety and stress.

The product sits on the desktop or mobile device and provides timely interactions for your team to inspire the best habits to help them become productive and positive.

Trickle

Confide is the latest product from Eden Scott's partner, Trickle. This new system complements the existing Trickle system by providing staff with a confidential route to getting the help they need to combat their negative mindset.

There are two specific stages. The first is access to detailed guides and support material or access that will inspire self-management of the problem.

The second is to raise a 'flare' which is picked up by an appropriate member of the team to help them, whatever the circumstance.

They too offer enterprise solutions and individual price options.

Headspace

Headspace is one of the most popular apps on the market. It focuses on the benefit of meditation and mindfulness in combating the pressure and stress that comes from daily life.

Headspace combines the practice of meditation with science and research as they recognise the only way to establish a better balance of health and happiness is to measure it.

There is a free version of Headspace for individuals to get to know the system as well as a 'Headspace for work' version.

Moodpath

Moodpath, which was developed by therapists and doctors, validated by psychologists, is a leading monitoring and self-management app for mobile devices.

It acts as a journal for people to record their mood and attitude daily. The app will use data from your devices and combine this with a robust database of symptoms that will recognise issues as they build up.

The app uses the insight and data it acquires to identify patterns of behaviour and provide suggested psychological courses and mindfulness exercises to help. It also allows users who suffer from a recurring mental health issue to understand the trigger and patterns to manage the condition.

Calm

Calm is one of the most popular apps available and comes with a business product. It is available on all devices, is available in six languages and has over 70m users worldwide.

Like many of the other products on the market, it focuses on the key areas that impact mental health. It has a sleep product that provides stories, music and meditation to ease the process of getting to sleep.

It has a raft of mindfulness and meditation techniques to reduce stress as well as the skills and habits that will strengthen the mind. It also helps users to focus the mind and increase creativity through meditation.

This award-winning app comes with an ongoing support package for businesses to help them achieve their objectives.

Find the right tool for your team

Taking the time to research the tools and find the right solution for your team will make a big difference to your organisation. Reducing the stress amongst your team will improve the productivity of your team and minimise absenteeism which is excellent for business. But more importantly, you will help the people that work for you to find a little more happiness.
